A trowel is one of the simplest tools in the garden shed, and this 39-dot puzzle keeps things just as simple — three short sections and a shape kids will recognise right away. Start with the scooped blade, then the neck that connects it to the handle, then the handle itself. Find dot 1 at the tip of the blade and let's start digging.
1–13 — The Blade
Start at dot 1 and connect through to dot 13 to draw the scooped, pointed blade of the trowel. The curve along one edge is the trickiest part here, so encourage a slow hand rather than a fast, straight line.
A trowel blade is curved rather than flat so it can scoop soil out of a hole in one motion, instead of needing several separate digging and lifting movements like a flat tool would.
14–26 — The Neck
Continue from dot 14 to dot 26 to draw the narrow neck where the blade meets the handle. This is the thinnest part of the whole tool, so keep the lines close together and controlled.
The neck of a trowel is usually the strongest part of the whole tool, since all the pushing and levering force from digging passes right through that narrow section.
27–39 — The Handle
Finish by connecting dots 27 through 39 to draw the rounded handle a gardener grips while digging. Just thirteen dots left — a firm, confident finish here completes the tool.
Trowel handles are often shaped a little wider at the end so the tool doesn't slip out of a gardener's hand, especially when their palms get damp from working in wet soil.
Nicely done — your trowel is ready to dig! Colour the blade a shiny metal grey and give the handle a bright colour of your choice. If you enjoyed this one, hop over to our dinosaur dot to dot printable collection for a completely different kind of dig.
