How to Solve the Cheerful Crab Dot-to-Dot Puzzle
Scuttle, scuttle! This cheerful little crab has washed up on the page and is ready for a young artist to bring it to life. With its round shell, big friendly claws, and eight scurrying legs, a crab is a fun and satisfying subject to draw one dot at a time. At 72 dots, this puzzle builds the crab up section by section — so find a sunny spot, grab a pencil, and let's head to the beach!
1–18 — The Round Shell
Start at dot 1 and work through to dot 18 to draw the crab's round, domed shell. The shell is made of smooth, sweeping curves, which makes a great warm-up for a steady hand — encourage one continuous line per curve rather than lots of little scratches.
A crab's shell is called a carapace, and it's incredibly hard — but it doesn't grow. Instead, a crab has to shed its old shell completely and grow a soft new one underneath, over and over again throughout its life.
19–34 — The Eyes and Friendly Face
Continue from dot 19 to dot 34 to add the crab's two eyes on stalks and its cheerful little face. This is a detailed section with dots placed close together, so it's great practice for patience and precision.
A crab's eyes sit on the tips of tiny stalks that can pop up or fold flat into grooves in its shell for protection. This gives crabs an almost 360-degree view of the world around them.
35–50 — The Big Claws
Trace dots 35 through 50 to draw the crab's two big, friendly claws. The claw outlines turn more tightly than the shell's smooth curves, so slow down here — steady, careful lines make the claws look strong and sturdy.
Many crabs have one claw bigger than the other, and they're not afraid to use them — the bigger claw is for crushing, while the smaller, sharper one is for snipping and picking up food.
51–72 — The Scurrying Legs
Finish by connecting dots 51 through 72 to add the eight scurrying legs around the crab's body. Twenty-two dots to the finish line — take it leg by leg, and a confident finish will bring the whole crab to life. Don't forget to add a happy smile!
Crabs have ten legs in total — eight for walking and the two big claws up front. Some species can even shed a leg on purpose to escape a predator, and simply grow a new one back over time.
Fantastic work on a 72-dot beach adventure! Your crab is ready for a coat of bright orange, red, or blue — and maybe a little sandy beach to scuttle across. Explore more cute dot to dot printables to keep the fun going.
